Five Tips for Keeping Skin Smooth During Winter Months

Five Tips for Keeping Skin Smooth During Winter Months

Dr. Ingleton, major dermatologist in New York City and lover of Eucerin skin care products, took a few moments to chat with ClassyBlackGirl.com as I asked her a few questions about keeping skin smooth, silky and beautiful as the Winter months approach us!!

1. What product do you recommend for women of color to use to avoid ashy knees and elbows?

To avoid ashy knees and elbows I would recommend Eucerin Intense Repair which has urea and ceramides to help thin out thickened skin and soothe dryness.

2. What types of beauty products should we avoid if we have dry skin or if we have oily skin?

If you have dry skin you should focus on using products that have extra emollients.  Avoid gel based cleansers, as they can be very drying. Instead, use a moisturizing body wash in the shower (e.g. Eucerin Calming Wash, which has added omega oils to soothe and hydrate while it cleanses).  Immediately after showering apply a rich moisturizer to lock in the skin’s natural moisture (e.g. Eucerin Smoothing Lotion).  For your face apply a moisturizing SPF lotion.

If you have oily skin it is best that you generally avoid heavy skincare products. For the face always choose products that are oil-free (e.g.  Eucerin Daily Protection Face lotion with SPF 30).  If you are particularly oily, a product that has oil-control ingredients added is a nice option.

3. When skin has been damaged what can we do to repair it?

Once skin has been damaged the key ingredients that will benefit during the healing process are petrolatum (as found in Aquaphor Healing Ointment, Eucerin Original Healing Cream) and Ceramides (as found in Eucerin Professional Repair). if you have eczema the Eucerin Skin Calming Cream that contains oatmeal and other moisturizers is best suited.

4. What are the visible effects of skin bleaching and is there anything that you reccomend if this has been done but you want to move away from it and help your skin?

Skin bleaching agents commonly contain hydroquinone. If high concentrations of hydroquinone are used for long periods it can thin the skin and lead to stretch marks (usually if the product is mixed with a steroid to enhance the effect), a washed out appearance to the skin ( not a natural skin color), visible broken blood vessels and rarely, a condition called Ochronosis , that causes irreversible darkening of the skin. Of the above potential side effects the broken blood vessels can be treated with lasers. The other side effects are not easily treated.

5. What is the easiest way to get rid of a pimple quickly?

The easiest way to get rid of a pimple quickly is to see your dermatologist for a dilute cortisone injection into the pimple. Other OTC(over the counter) options (less effective) include topical salicylic acid and topical benzoyl peroxide applied directly to the pimple. Caution: over-application can burn the skin surface.
