It does not fall on irony that as I watched last nights disgraceful “Love and Hip Hop ATL” the Reunion Session that my Mother says, “This is trash and White men are looking mighty good these days.” I just kind of laughed and shrugged it off.
In a completely coincidental action I grabbed “Swirling: How to Date, Mate and Relate Mixing Race, Culture and Creed.” I knew that I needed to review it and that I owed Swairlin author, Christelyn D. Karazin, a phone call. So I have been mildly curious about dating other men, only because I have been feeling as if I have been in a rat-race with self-important brothers. I wanted to have an experience where I had something in common beyond Melanin and the fact that we both liked Soul Train-and honestly I had made bad choices in men and it was reflected in my relationships. Never had I really thought about the fact that maybe there were not a lot of good choices out there.
“I love my brothers,” I started the conversation with Christelyn. She immediately giggled in that sweet happy tone that I rarely hear my own girlfriends pipe in, Damn, she is really happy. I thought with only a twinge of envy. She is and has been happily married to her “Rainbeau” husband for over 12 years and they have a budding family and he does not mind being the bread winner. Were there still men like this out there? “Sharelle you do not have to justify yourself to me or anybody else. Brothers have been dating outside of their race since Frederick Douglass and before when he married his second wife Helen Pitts in 1884.” And after all who is more Black than Frederick Douglass I asked myself.
As I read this book I found that I a was reading more than skimming, I found that I was enthralled more than just reviewing, I was taking personal notes. This book was written directly to me and other women like me. I have been hesitating and hemming and hawing about stepping out there, not only did this book encourage me to not be afraid but that I was every bit the Sista if I decided to date more than just Jerome and them.
If you are a single or newly dating woman of any color, but especially if you are a single, 30+ Sista who desires life partnership read this book and apply honey!! It helps you to remove the guilt of dating interracially, smile at the fact that men of other ethnicities are curious and genuinely interested, and just take that plunge. Swirling is well written, fun to read and such a page turner that I fell asleep with mine on my chest!…who knew that Oakland was a “Swirling capital?”
I am going to begin smiling back at Chad and Marco, because…well because “Why not?”
Christelyn is giving the hope back to Single Sistas who have decided to marry their work, sista-circles and churches. We can have love too and it does not have to come at a price that sacrifices our human dignity and femininity.
San Francisco, August 2012
So I have been using Evernote since I found out about it at a Tory Johnson event in July! I quickly became such a proponent of the tool that I wanted to come to the Evernote Conference in San Francisco this past month because I knew that the readers of ClassyBlackGirl.com needed to know about the massive productivity assistance that Evernote provides.
As far as the conference was concerned, I did not know what to expect. I have been to hundreds of conferences. Generally I have a good time, and I judge it based on the people and the food and *kanye-shrug* it up.
This conference Blew Me away as did the total potential of the Tool “Evernote.” I was never so excited and then so disappointed as when I arrived at the conference and there were so few people that looked like me. While the responsibility of learning about a new tool lies equally on those that it might benefit and those who have created it, I am excited to be an Unofficial Ambassador(I created this title myself) of this tool so that more Women of Color can use this productivity tool and streamline their lives. Evernote welcomed me as a member of the Media and I am going to share Evernote widely.
But I must digress and share how delicious the food was! OMG….at every possible moment to eat there were food trucks, amazing breakfasts, REAL ORANGE juice, Red Bulls to keep you at 100 all day! And I even had a delicious Bento Bowl!!
Here are some Conference Highlights that you should be aware of:
Evernote Now has a Business Edition for more sharing capabilities!
There is an awesome new Evernote/Moleskin Smark Notebook to help you transfer your written notes into your Evernote to make it completely searchable!
Evernote Trunk is now available! For me this is huge because I am always looking for new and exciting plugins to add to my Evernote!
The next day I high-tailed it back over to San Francisco to hit the Evernote Business Bootcamp hosted by my absolute two most favorite Evernote Ambassadors, Lindsey C. Holmes and Joshua Zerkel! This intense 3 hour Bootcamp discussed awesome ways in which businesses can ramp up their productivity to create more money and more time freedom! They also launched their new book, Evernote:Integrate whic of course I copped and I am Intergrating! If you ever dreamed about going paperless surely you should cop this book!

So I am always reading and rarely do I get a really good read that I can sink my teeth and my mind into.
I was crusing one of my favorite spots, Amazon, one payday evening…and Yuli Ziv’s book came across my computer screen.
Yuli Ziv is a celebrated blogger who has been blogging as a business successfully since 2007. Her own personal story is moving and I would be a kill-joy to tell you instead of letting you read it on your own!
What caught my eye was that it was competitively priced but that it was ALSO offered as a printed book and not just an e-book. I was excited to get this book because it was about my favorite past-time, Blogging. And this was advice and a blueprint from a MAJOR Blogger. As soon as I opened the book I was enthralled, taking it on a church bus trip, reading it late at night and snatching moments to grab some of her vast knowledge.
Yuli was teaching about how to do what I love, making REAL money doing it and how to do it even better. I was taking notes IN the book, re-reading chapters and now that I am finished I am about to create my own personal workbook based on my notes from her book…a working list of the things that I need to do! From daily review of my Google Analytics to how to negotiate a deal with a blogging network, there were no stones left unturned and I could not stop reading!! If you are a Blogger, or just want to be, since there is no degreed program, yet for this field I encourage you to study this book like crazy! Yuli gives you the goods from her heart, her mind and her driven spirit.
I have not read a “blue-print book” yet that was this good!
Since the actual book is finished now its time for the cover…Im excited and nervous…between photographers and my anxiousness about looking skinny and fly and wanting people to like it…I think that I am lightweight procrastinating!! Which is crazy because that is not my personality!! I think that if everybody took the time to write the world would be a place where people would be more sensitive because they were always seeing other peoples writing!! Ah well…Good Night and my first Manners Manual WILL be available on September 30th!!
